General Information

An inflamed disc is another term to describe changes seen on an MRI scan. Changes identified in the vertebral bone called the endplates on either side of the intervertebral disc are called inflammatory changes. These findings are also referred to as “Modic Changes” after Dr. Mike Modic, a radiologist who first described them and published his findings. The clinical significance of these finding are still unclear but may have some association with symptomatic patients that have degenerative discs, or, discogenic pain syndrome.
