Another important element of any exercise and rehabilitation program is aerobic exercise and conditioning. It goes hand and hand with muscle stretching, joint mobilization, and muscle strengthening. It takes the hard work performed in strengthening and improving muscle function and transforms it into enhanced function and endurance. The beneficial effects are improved blood flow, elimination of metabolic waste products, improved heart and lung function, and enhanced metabolic function at the cell level.

People with back problems should engage in aerobic exercises that are essentially low impact. What this means is that the exercise should focus on motion, repetition, and duration of exercise, rather than on pounding our joints and disc spaces. I discourage high impact aerobic exercises such as running, jogging, and jumping. These can be substituted with cycling, water aerobics, and other exercise equipment such as recumbent bicycles, treadmills, and elliptical machines. Walking and spinning fall somewhere in between.
