Q. What the difference between a bulging disc and a herniated disc?

A. Bulging disc is a condition when the space between the intervertebral space starts to collapse and the outer rings of the disc begin to bulge out (think of a soft ice cream sandwich with the ice cream bulging out as it melts or a the bulge on a tire seen as air has leaked out). A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner material found in an intervertebral disc ruptures though the outer wall of the disc structure.
