Q. How is facet arthritis diagnosed?

A. A facet block injection can help diagnose and isolate the exact cause of back or neck pain, caused by facet arthritis and other conditions. This involves injecting a local anesthetic and sometime a cortisone preparation into and around the facet joint using a c-arm or television x-ray. An intervention pain specialist or spine surgeon will usually perform this test. This type of injection can also be used to treat painful joints.
