Q. Why is Dr. Biscup a leader in revision surgery for failed back syndrome?

A. Dr. Biscup and his staff received the Patient Advocacy Award from the American Academy of Pain Management for their pioneering work in using a multidisciplinary approach in the evaluation and care of patients who have had failed spine surgery. Patients who underwent this special evaluation process and were treated using the team’s recommendations had a very high success rate: 78 percent compared to the 30 percent or 35 percent reported in medical journals. This success rate was also noted with patients who have had multiple surgeries.

The key to success is in the evaluation and patient selection process. Physicians and therapists from multiple specialties look at the patient as a whole person. The greatest success was in those patients who were highly motivated to get better and had strong family support.
