Q. Will a herniated disc heal on its own?

A. Herniated discs are very common and the majority are asymptomatic. In 85 percent of herniated disc cases, symptoms go away after a few days or weeks. Surgery is rarely needed unless severe and intractable pain is present and/or nerve damage is occurring (which happens less than 1 percent of the time). For the majority of symptomatic disc herniations, we are treating pain.
